I got a Rubik's Cube in around 1981 after reading about it in Douglas Hofstadter's (one of my heroes) Scientific American, column (blog post version).
It took me 4 days to solve the thing, and that's an intensive 4 days, with time off only to go to work. I had my final premonition in the shower, and it was solved. As promised, by Mr. Hafstadter, the solution was elegant and satisfying.
Here's my notes on how I solve it. It was an early attempt to try out Google Docs and see if it had good enough graphics to make Word unnecessary. (Google Docs was a success in that regard, and it's only gotten better).
